What Is the Codeword Solver?

The Codeword Solver finds the English words that fit a codeword or crossword entry, based on the letters you know. It works on one entry at a time and doesn't fill the whole grid.

How to Enter Letter Clues

Type the entry from your puzzle grid, one character per square. You can use three types of characters: a known letter, a dot for an unknown letter, and a digit for a repeated unknown letter in a codeword. Press Solve or the Enter key to find matches, then click a word to copy it.

Unknown squares cannot use letters already written in the pattern or in Letters already found. Repeated digits (1 to 9) stand for the same unknown letter; different digits must stand for different letters. For a crossword, use this tool when those restrictions fit your entry, or use Word Finder's Pattern filter for unrestricted missing letters.

If you're solving a codeword, you can add the letters you've already found elsewhere in the grid to exclude them from unknown squares.

Example: You enter .O.NT and add C and P as letters you've found. The solver will exclude COUNT and POINT. Press Clear to empty the pattern for your next entry; your found letters stay in place.

What's a Codeword?

It's a cipher-style puzzle where you fit words in a grid of numbered squares. Each number corresponds to one letter of the alphabet, so finding the letters in one word helps you fill other squares in the puzzle.

Where the Words Come From

The Codeword Solver uses a dictionary built from the ENABLE word list, with commonness information from the English Speller Database and editorial curation. Results include US and British spellings.
